Artist Statement
My involvement with ceramics started with a simple desire to create interesting forms in clay. Like any student work these forms were mainly inspired by the work of other artists and various cultural traditions.
I was fascinated by the way one could manipulate clay to any form that came to mind. This led me to search for forms that could go beyond those of traditional pottery. My first step in this direction was to try to deconstruct the concept of the vessel, by taking a basic bowl shape and adding geometric elements. Eventually I abandoned this approach. By eliminating bowl shape altogether, I was forced to start building each new piece from the ground up, whatever shape that may be.
Creating these new sculptural forms brought me closer to an understanding of the expressive language of abstract art and led to the formulation of my own visual vocabulary.
